Green GMIST summit reveals small operators need more examples of how to make their tourism businesses sustainable.

Gros Morne Summit on Sustainable Tourism highlights success stories, outlines challenges for industry’s future.

Of course there was plenty of local seafood and veggies from the Rocky Harbour, NL area. But the best part of the Gros Morne International Summit on Sustainable Tourism was the chance for small business owners to sit down in groups with some of the leading names in the business, said Rogier Gruys, product specialist in the Product Innovation and Enhancement unit of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC).
 
The CTC helped sponsor the event, attended by both Gruys and CTC president and CEO Michele McKenzie. The summit, September 29 – October 2, gathered together world leaders in sustainable tourism, such as Bruce Poon Tip from G.A.P. Adventures and Tony Wheeler from Lonely Planet. The open-space format meant participants could easily move from one discussion group to the next.
 
“Overall, I learned sustainable tourism is becoming more mainstream,” Gruys said. “But there is a lot more work to be done to provide small- and medium-sized enterprises with examples of successes and how they can make their experience more sustainable. Consumers are demanding sustainable experiences and are choosing operators who engage in sustainable practices.”
