Canadian architect Saunders unveils plans for new Torngasok cultural centre in Labrador. Wow.

by Michelle Pentz Glave

He’s at it again. First, Canadian-born starchitect Todd Saunders (now of Bergen, Norway) hit international headlines with his otherworldly Fogo Island Arts colony in remote Newfoundland and Labrador, a writer/artist’s retreat in the form of a collection of off-the-grid, modern pavilions scattered onto windswept bluffs.

Now Saunders is designing a new cultural and language centre for the Nunatsiavut Government in Nain, Labrador (of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada’s far-east Atlantic province). Nunatsiavut, “our beautiful land” in Inuktitut, is the homeland of Labrador Inuit. Slotted for a 2013 opening, the 1,800-sq-m Torngasok Cultural Centre includes a large exhibition centre, artist studio, auditorium, craft shop and café.

Take a look. Stunning doesn’t even begin to describe this minimalist dazzler folded into the misty Labrador landscape. The vibe? Hmmm. Something like Björk meets The Jetsons.
