Flying in to Canada’s back country

by Masa Takei

They have the largest heli-ski tenure in British Columbia – 1.5 million acres of the Coast Mountain range – an area larger than Croatia. When they're not dropping skiers and boarders onto unnamed peaks and custom-order slopes, Bella Coola Helisports takes guests out for world-class fly-fishing and bear viewing down the Atnarko and Bella Coola rivers. In the fall, guests in “McKenzie River drift boats” float past grizzlies feeding on spawning salmon along the riverbanks. If that’s not close enough to nature, visitors can get right in the water with the salmon and snorkel among them. Visitors who want to get into both “back and up” country can take a heli-tour into the high glaciated terrain of the Monarch Icefield. If making the bulk of your elevation gain by helicopter isn’t already convenient enough, you can have your copter pick you up and drop you off at Tweedsmuir Park Lodge’s front lawn. For a change of pace from “heli-setting” around the BC wilderness, take a boat out and soak in natural hot springs along the fjord and perhaps do a little crabbing or prawn fishing along the way.
