Whitehorse, Yukon in 12 Hours: The LowDown

by Victoria Revay

I’m not sure if you realize this, but it is possible to get a locals-know feel for a city in less than a week. Even in as little as 12-hours.  We’ve mastered it– I mean–we’re travelling across the country in less than 8 weeks!

Now, it's your turn to come and discover the best of spots to hit, while you’re up here.  You’ll get a taste for the North that’ll keep you coming back or you might not even leave...

Staying:

SKKY Hotel is a boutique hotel that offers a modern, luxurious feel for the elite traveller in you.  Think of overlooking the most spectacular views of Whitehorse, a rushing river and endless mountains and trails, AND sipping a martini.  For a more traditional feel, High Country Inn has the largest year-round patio and it’s beside the Millennium Trail.

Eating:

Klondike Ribs and Salmon BBQ restaurant fills up fast and there are no reservations taken.  Frequented by throngs of Holland America Cruise passengers, the room is reminiscent of a set in a Clint Eastwood Western.  Is it surprising?  The building has been operational since the 1900s.  Try their daily fish specials (the salmon is king) or the mammoth-sized ribs and fries.  Wash it all down with a cool local brew, the Chilkoot, and you’re good as Yukon gold.

Doing:

When you’re finished your canoe, kayak or biking day-trip with the Kanoe People, why don’t you check out the Whitehorse Fish Ladder, a living-storytelling attraction about the longest salmon migration in the world.
