T+L, Fodor’s name Cape Breton, NS, one of best islands in world.

Why? Easy: stunning scenery, riveting history, Celtic culture—and we’re just getting started.

by Kathryn Harley Haynes

Cape Bretoners have always known it, and now the word is out everywhere: that the Nova Scotia island is one of the best in the world. Travel + Leisure magazine readers recently rated Cape Breton third, right after Bali and the Galapagos. And Fodor’s calls it an island paradise. So what’s all the hubbub?

Well for one thing, there’s the scenery. Rocky, romantic, sweeping, maritime. For some of the most breathtaking views, check out the Cabot Trail, a 298-km (185-mi) roadway that soars above oceanside cliffs and dips into sheltered coves. Then there’s the history: a fascinating mix for you to explore, ranging from the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, the largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town in North America, to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. There’s the culture: including Celtic music that’s drawn raves from The Guardian, an array of Scottish crafts taught with traditional care at the Gaelic College and the magic of Mikmaq storytelling at Wagmatcook Centre.

More? Well, there’s golf: Golf Digest once rated Cape Breton as one of the world’s best golf destinations. And there’s whisky: Cape Breton is home to Glenora Inn & Distillery, North America’s only single-malt distillery.

You can always go and see for yourself.
