Canada’s best shopping: our list of tops.

The ultimate retail spots from coast to coast. Ladies, start your credit cards!

by Michele Sponagle

These Canadian shopping destinations are sure to lead you into temptation—designer goodies, perks for the home, shoes, shawls and shams… Have credit card, will travel: just point the way!

  1. Bloor-Yorkville, Toronto, ON: In the ‘60s, this was hippie central. Now, it’s been nicknamed “the mink mile” for its row of designer shops (from Prada to Vera Wang) and gorgeous stores like upscale Holt Renfrew (Canadian and international fashion labels) and Teatro Verde (home décor). Watch for visiting celebrities loaded up with shopping bags. www.bloor-yorkville.com

  2. Water Street District, St. John’s, NL: As one of North America’s oldest commercial streets, it’s not surprising it’s evolved into primo shopping territory: antique stores, handmade woollen goods at Woof Design (Kevin Spacey wore one of their sweaters in “The Shipping News”), handmade soaps, cosmetics at Tval… We could go on.

  3. Academy Road, Winnipeg, MB: The neighbourhood says to visitors, “stop and stay a while.” After you’ve browsed boutiques specializing in everything from saris to handmade jewellery, linger over sushi, flaky croissants or old-fashioned ice-cream sundaes.

  4. Chabanel, Montréal, QC: Virtually unknown among tourists, this hidden gem is the place for fabulous fashion finds. Home to clothing manufacturers, importers and buyers, you’ll leave with designer outfits that will make you feel like a million bucks at a fraction of regular prices.

  5. Yaletown, Vancouver, BC: This seven-block area, a rail yard in the 19th century, retains oodles of old-worn charm. Strolling is divine as you nibble on yummy Parisian pastries (from Ganache Patisserie) and pick up everything from chic lingerie to accessories for the well-dressed canine. Quaint galleries unleash your inner decorator with abstract art and one-of-a-kind Pacific Northwest creations.

  6. ByWard Market, Ottawa, ON: It is possible to hang out from sun up to sun down within an area that’s four blocks square. This place hosts food shops crammed with delicious goodies (local artisanal cheeses, vats of plump olives, etc.), artsy décor boutiques, fine dining, pubs, nightclubs and even hotels, making the ByWard a true one-stop shop. Even US President Obama dropped by to buy the market’s famous Canadian treat: BeaverTails.

  7. Spring Garden Road, Halifax, NS: Just blocks away from the picturesque harbour, shopping along this pretty stretch has plenty of perks. The views, of course, but it’s also about variety with big name retailers sharing postal codes with one-off boutiques, specializing in goods like gemstone jewelry, vintage books and Celtic handicrafts.   www.springgardenroad.com
