Northern luxury: And now, ladies and gentlemen, Elk Ridge Resort.

Saskatchewan’s poshest new hotel is a blockbuster hit. Action or inaction—whatever tickles your fancy—are both on the menu.

Spider Man? Indiana Jones? It’s not just successful Hollywood movies that have sequels. Resorts have them, too. Take Elk Ridge Resort. Located near Waskesiu in Northern Saskatchewan, just outside the gates of Prince Albert National Park, it offered quaint cabins and elegant villa residences along with a bevy of all-season recreational activities. It was a winning formula, so much so that a sequel, in the form of a 34-room hotel with a spa, was needed.

And just like a blockbuster film, it took time to come to fruition—three years, in fact. The result is a luxurious hotel (opened July 2008) that appeals to guests who like to relax and to those who crave non-stop action. I’m more of the do-nothing type, so I’m content to nest in the comfy rooms—deluxe suites equipped with Jacuzzi tubs, some with fireplaces and all rooms with balconies—for scenic views of the boreal forest, home to elk, moose, white-tailed deer and black bears.

But I can handle a limited amount of nothingness. The Salacia Spa and Copper Ridge Restaurant (dishing up Saskatchewan specialties: wild rice, Saskatoon berry pie and roast buffalo) serve as appropriate entertainment. Even though the 27-hole golf course is top-ranked in the province, it may be too stressful for an inept golfer like myself. The spa is more my speed. Perusing the Salacia Spa menu, my eyes stop at words like “uplifting,” “calming” and “invigorating.” I opt for a Lemongrass Hydro Body Ritual, a combination of exfoliation, Vichy shower and massage. By the end of my stay, I’m not uplifted or invigorated, but blissfully calm. That’s enough to give my stay a glowing review.
