Fall is for apple picking.

You can U-pick all across Canada this autumn.

I pay a lot of lip service to eating locally and in season, but this autumn I’ll really be putting my money where my mouth is. I’m picking apples at a working orchard. Lucky for all of us, when it comes to Canadian apple farms, there’s no slim pickings. Here are a few popular U-pick spots worth checking out between now and late October.

Davison Orchards Country Village, Vernon, BC: Visit this friendly Okanagan Valley orchard during September and try your luck with apple-themed games and contests, sample fresh-pressed apple juice, and of course, pick some apples. Come on a Saturday and you can fill up on a pancake (‘n apple cider syrup) breakfast before you fill your bucket. www.davisonorchards.ca

Chudleigh’s, Milton, ON: Top off a day of apple picking at this grand, third-generation orchard (28,000 trees on 100 ac) with a meal at the licensed restaurant. Or take that well-earned country lunch outdoors and enjoy the beauty of the Niagara Escarpment while you dine. www.chudleighs.com

Les Vergers Ocenas Orchards, Franklin Centre, QC : In southwest Quebec, you can pick up some history with your apples at this quaint third-generation orchard overlooking scenic Chateauguay Valley. You’ll also find a playground, woodland trail and plenty of fresh baked goods to pass off as your own. www.vergersocenas.com
