Cross-Canada glamping: the It list.

Who says you have to suffer on a camping trip? Bonfire lattés and sleeping under the stars have never looked better.

by Teresa Earle

Just as Googling, bling and staycation found their way into the popular lexicon, so cometh “glamping.” This made-up word fabulously describes one of the hottest travel trends in years: luxurious camping.

Glamping is a far cry from the garden-variety tenting ritual that many Canadians embark on each summer. It’s a throwback to the classic safari: think porters, trunks, crystal and white linen. So, if we can invent words like “Googling,” why can’t we stretch our vocabulary to embrace a more pampered way of getting back to nature? Goodbye, Coleman stove and instant noodles; hello, down duvet and afternoon massage!

From coast to coast, here are some of Canada’s top glamping destinations:

  • Yukon’s Uncommon Journeys has been leading first-class dogsledding tours for years based out of a deluxe wilderness yurt camp that redefines the notion of “winter camping.” After exhilarating days mushing their own dog team, guests retreat to camp comforts like a sauna, hot showers and savoury meals. http://travelyukon.com
  • WildExodus near Timmins, ON, marries canoeing and boreal forest discovery with memorable refinements like canvas tents, gourmet dishes and Canadian wine served with evening dinner. www.ontariotravel.net
  • Misabi Adventure Company’s camp on the shore of Lake Obabika in Ontario’s Temagami wilderness promises rustic experiences with flair. This peaceful retreat is the ideal base for canoeing, angling, forest walks or just plain relaxing.

  • From early January to the end of March each winter, Quebec’s Hôtel de Glace (just 30 minutes from Québec City) welcomes guests for an icy retreat like no other. This white palace consists of a café, bar, hot tubs and fireplaces, chapel and elegant suites—all crafted from snow and ice each year from scratch. www.bonjourquebec.com
