What’s happening in Canada for the holidays?

British Columbia

I'm tempted to leave the madding crowds to the malls this December and boogey up to the Cariboo Chilcotin for Barkerville’s Old Fashioned Christmas in Barkerville, BC, a (seriously) authentic 1860s Gold Rush town. You can see St. Nick in his Enchanted Forest, snag a one-of-a-kind Victorian keepsake in the Mason & Daly General Store, and snuggle in for some B&B bliss.

Caravan Farm Theatre presents The Secret Sorrow of Hatchet Jack MacPhee, a winter sleigh-ride show, on a 32-ha (80-ac) farm in the Thompson Okanagan near Armstrong. Guests board a horse-drawn sleigh and head out for a rowdy existentialist romp in the snow in search of Love, Truth and The Art of Happiness, interrupted by a mean gang of outlaws holding up your sleigh and high-speed horse chases courtesy of the RCMP.

For an opportunity to visit the big guy in the red suit, take your kids to the Vancouver Aquarium. Scuba Claus, decked out in scuba gear, will be swimming with the fishes in the Strait of Georgia exhibit at noon.

Mt. Seymour ski resort, a 45-minute drive from Vancouver, has Full Moon Tours that cover myths and legends of the stars and sky, led by local guides. Seymour’s Chocolate Fondue Tours offer tasty outings as you snowshoe along wooded trails before indulging in a decadent chocolate fondue.
