What’s happening in Canada this summer?

Heady fields of lavender

by Jessica Raya

If the mere scent of lavender can send you off to dream land, just imagine what a few nights at a lavender farm will do. Snug in the restful rolling hills of Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, BC, overlooking endless fields of the heavenly flora, Damali Lavender Farm gives lucky B&B guests the chance to find out.

A working lavender farm with more than 10,000 plants of 12 varieties, Damali invites you stop, smell and cut the flowers. Roll up your sleeves and pitch in on farm chores or amble along fragrant meadow paths accompanied by the farmhouse dog. In the evenings, breathe in the sweeping view of Salt Spring Island while enjoying a post-wine tour Cowichan Valley vintage on the veranda of the French-inspired farmhouse. Later, slip on your complimentary robe and head to the infrared sauna, followed by a relaxing hot shower with handmade lavender spa products. Come morning, awake to the heartening aroma of a country kitchen where fresh farm eggs, baked goods and lavender delicacies await.

Open daily from June to September, weekends in April, May and October, and most any time by appointment or chance, Damali welcomes overnight guests and day visitors through the year. Fill a day or a week with essential-oil extraction demos (during harvest time), wine and vinegar tastings in the converted barn, guided or self-guided farm tours, and lavender U-pick. However long you stay, be sure to snag some essential lavender oil, lavender products, spa products arts and crafts, and culinary treats from the Damali Farm Shoppe for sweet dreams long after you’ve returned home.
