LGBT Americans cozy up to Canada.

New American gay and lesbian survey reveals most-visited Canadian cities. Vancouver, Montréal and Toronto are the faves.

by Lori McNulty

If there’s one brand LGBT* Americans are loyal to, it’s Canada. And not just because we’ve got sweeter views of Niagara Falls. We offer freedom to marry, cultural scenes that embrace everyone and gay-welcoming cities (with or without oceanfront views). And don’t forget our attractive exchange rate!
Results from the 13th-annual LGBT Tourism Study are now in. The study of more than 4,000 LGBT consumers by San Francisco, CA (USA)-based Community Marketing, Inc. (CMI) focused on overnight visits to the US and Canada in the past year. So which Canadians cities were most visited? Vancouver, BC and Toronto, ON topped the list for leisure and business travel. Montréal, QC finished a strong third in both categories. See the complete LGBT Tourism Study results.
Vancouver
As if Vancouver didn’t boast enough beautiful bodies, imagine the scene when the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games come to town. Until then, you’ll have to settle for the wildly popular Vancouver Pride, sandy beaches, great artistic enclaves, hot nightlife and funky neighbourhoods. Join West End locals for English Bay sunsets and the hive of world-beat culture on Commercial Drive.
Toronto
Edgy, artsy, booming Toronto has room for everyone: hot, indie music scenes, celebrity-chic shopping, all-night dance parties in the Gay Village and an über-cool mixed crowd of caffeinated folks in the Queer West Village. The massive Pride Parade is part of a 10-day street and love fest.
Montreal
Gay by design? Montréal embraces the bold and beautiful with Parisian flair. The gay village (Le Village) is a spectacular Euro-style metropolis that rivals the best of New York or San Francisco. And it’s a car-free playground in summer. Divers/Cité, Montréal’s LGBT Pride Festival, and image + nation are among the most popular LGBT festivals in the world.
* LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual.
