Pedal that pavement: masses take to the streets of Montréal, QC’s cyclo-palooza, the biggest two-wheeled parade on earth.

The popular Tour de l’Île turns 25, caps off another year in North America’s top cycling city.

by Margo Pfeiff

When is an urban traffic jam a good thing? When it’s a vast wave of 26,000 folks on bikes jockeying for position on a 50-km (31-mi) ride around the car-free heart of Montréal, QC. Anyone can join in for this kids-to-seniors day. It’s not a race, just an excuse for fun, exercise, music, crazy costumes and a chance to raise awareness of the bicycle as a mode of transport. video
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Tour de l’Île is the largest gathering of cyclists on the planet. And this June, the tour is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The tour is the highlight of the eight-day Montréal Bike Fest, a calendar of cycling events that includes the Metropolitan Challenge, where enthusiasts pedal 75, 100, 125, or 150-km routes. Giving it a twist is the unique Un Tour La Nuit, a 22-km (14-mi) nighttime ride past a quarry lit up for the occasion. A dazzling party of fire-breathers, acrobats and musicians caps off the night. No wonder Bicycling Magazine ordained Montréal the best cycling city in North America.
