National Geographic ADVENTURE’s picks of top adventure travel companies in the world.

Canada scores 18 of the top slots, including Wildland Tours, Canadian Mountain Holidays and Maple Leaf Adventures.

by Suzanne Morphet

Sometimes, deciding where you travel is not as important as with whom you travel. That’s the thinking behind National Geographic ADVENTURE magazine's rating of top adventure travel companies in the world. Given Canada is a must-see destination, it’s good to know that 18 of the crème de la crème are Canadian.

Selecting the best and eliminating the others rivalled a TV “Survivor” series. Companies had to score 85 out of 100 or higher in a gruelling evaluation.

Canada’s “best” includes Maple Leaf Adventures, a company that takes just eight guests at a time cruising along our wild west coast. Three other noteworthy cruising companies are Bluewater Adventures, Cruise North Expeditions and Adventure Canada.

If paddling is your preference, Canadian River Expeditions/Nahanni River Adventures boasts over 30 years on northern rivers. Or live by the rhythm of the tides with BatStar Adventure Tours on Vancouver Island, BC. Adrenaline junkies: investigate Esprit Rafting.

Canadian Mountain Holidays made the grade for skiing and hiking. Ditto for Selkirk Mountain Experience.

Walkers are rewarded on Scott Walking Adventures and cyclists rave about Freewheeling Adventures.

Great Bear Nature Tours is all about grizzly bears on the west coast, while Wildland Tours invites guests to catalogue marine mammals on the east coast. Whitney & Smith Legendary Expeditions' biologist guides ensure optimal wildlife viewing, mostly in the Americas. Sea to Sky Expeditions offers canoeing, kayaking, rafting or trekking holidays, while BikeHike Adventures gives you a combo.

For active luxury look up Butterfield & Robinson, and for affordable adventure G.A.P. Adventures rules.
