Got a hankering to don ‘jammies’ and sleep in a church, lighthouse or lobster boat?

Then tuck yourself into one of PEI’s unusual digs for the night.

Rarely in church do you have to search your soul and ask yourself, Jacuzzi on the deck or giant tub in the bell tower? You do at Harrington House, an 1864 Protestant church converted into a stylish cottage on Prince Edward Island’s south shore. Rustic outside, it’s chic inside. Living and dining take place in the great room beneath an open cathedral ceiling (www.harringtonhousecanada.com).

These days, you don’t have to stop at snapshots of the rural and seaside icons dotting PEI’s picture-perfect landscapes. Innovative innkeepers are making it possible to check into them. Love the lighthouses? Then curl up in the Tower Room of West Point Lighthouse overlooking sand-dune beaches (www.westpointlighthouse.com). Or unpack in a big ‘ol barn-gone-loft just minutes from Charlottetown (www.acountryhomepei.com). It just might be a religious experience.

  • Want to bed down in a lobster boat enjoying a second career as a boathouse motel? Here’s a rustic 47 footer (14 m) near Seacow Pond. www.islandsendmotel.com
  • Spend a naughty weekend in Tignish Heritage Inn, a convent (Our Lady of Angels) restored in traditional country style in Tignish. www.tignish.com/inn
  • Wake up in a cabin to the clucking of roosters and ducks that have the run of this off-the-grid organic farm near the sea in southwestern PEI. You can gather your own freshly laid eggs for breakfast. www.pioneerfarm.ca
  • Approach luxury from the sea on an inn-to-inn kayaking trip along PEI’s eastern shore, passing white sandy beaches and red sandstone cliffs. Retire for the day at top island lodges, such as the newly opened Inn at Spry Point. www.getoutside.com
