It’s a whistler, so to speak. Epic Revelstoke Mountain Resort in BC opens to much fanfare.

Some say new $1-billion dollar ski area to rival all-season appeal of famed Whistler-Blackcomb.

Mind the stats: North America’s newest, longest vertical descent (1,829 m or 6,000 ft). Some 18 m (60 ft) of champagne powder every year. Epic heli-, snowcat, and lift skiing from a single mountain base. And, oh, 500,000 skiable acres. If anyone with a penchant for powder skiing doesn’t feel the slightest urge to head into the heart of British Columbia to the new Revelstoke Mountain Resort, his blood might not be circulating.

Situated on powder-dusted Mount Mackenzie, just 6 km from the town of Revelstoke (long considered the epicenter of chest-deep snow), observers say the Revelstoke Mountain Resort is one of the most compelling ski resort developments in the history of the sport.

“When you consider the scope of this project, the four-season village, the restaurants, the hotels, the golf course, the wildly popular real estate offerings, it’s easily the most exciting project I’ve ever been a part of,” says Paul Skelton, president of Revelstoke Mountain Resort. “This mountain is going to blow people away.”

The creators are positioning the resort, halfway between Calgary, AB and Vancouver, BC, as an all-season family destination for adventure-lovers. Unlike Whistler-Blackcomb, branded a big-time party town, Revelstoke aims to lure a broader range of clientele—namely, American and European heli-ski addicts who’ve been flocking to this alpine mecca for decades.

And it’s already starting. On Dec. 22, 2007, a high-speed, eight-passenger gondola whooshed skiers into the realm of unspoiled sugar bowls. The resort also debuted with a high-speed quad lift that covers 645 vertical m (2,116 vertical ft) in just 6 minutes. Altogether, 27 trails are open for the 2008 season (on 1,443 vertical m or 4,735 vertical ft). And this is just Phase I. www.discoverrevelstoke.com
