The Royal Winnipeg Ballet turns 70.

North America’s longest continuously operating ballet company premieres ‘Moulin Rouge’ in fall 2009.

by Julie Ovenell-Carter

It’s a cultural coup: the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB)—Canada’s premier ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America—based in Winnipeg, MB is about to turn 70.
Let’s be honest: who would have bet that a little dance company from the Canadian Prairies would one day grow up to be so successful? To celebrate the accomplishment, the internationally acclaimed troupe is gearing up for a festivity-filled 2009-2010 season.
First up this fall is the premiere of a new ballet, “Moulin Rouge”—a love story set in the infamous Parisian cabaret—by Jorden Morris, a former principal dancer who is now associate director and instructs in the RWB’s professional training program. True to the RWB tradition of bringing ballet to the outback, “Moulin Rouge” will tour broadly in Canada (with a quick detour across the border to perform in Minneapolis, MN, USA).
The little-company-that-could is hoping to collect “70 stories for 70 years” from RWB friends, fan or former students. If you have a favourite memory, send it along to anniversary@rwb.org and share in the birthday love.
