Two grooms on a caketop. Yep. Same-sex wedding? Tips on where and how to wed.

May kicks off wedding season in Canada, and the GLBT community is tying the knot in high style.

by Kathy Eccles
I’d never been to a Jewish wedding before. Or a wedding held in a private home this spectacular. It was a 1956 mid-century modern recently renovated into a masterpiece of glass walls and colourful art canvases. It had a great view, too, of English Bay that went black as the sun came down, and the hushed, candlelit ceremony began.

Blessings and song followed the offering and accepting of the rings. It was beautiful. After the traditional breaking of the glass, and shouts of mazel tov, we toasted the happy couple with salty margaritas. The two grooms kissed while they cut a gorgeous tiered cake covered in spring blooms.

Together for 25 years and partners in business for 16, well-known Vancouver, BC restaurateurs Lorne Tyczenski and Stephen Greenham—owners of Sweet Obsession Cakes and Pastries and Trafalgars Bistro—were legally married on Feb. 16 before 100 or so thrilled family and friends.

Yes, same-sex weddings are legal in Canada. Gay and lesbian couples are welcome to officially tie the knot and celebrate in style. And May signals the start of wedding season in Canada.

Here, tips on where to wed and who can help:

*Get married on the mountain in welcoming Whistler, BC, host of WinterPRIDE. The town’s same-sex wedding planner can also arrange nuptials in Vancouver, Victoria, Sechelt and Salt Spring Island.

*Consult with newlywed Stephen Greenham on a custom-designed wedding cake. His specialty: fresh floral creations. Trafalgars Bistro can also be made available for an intimate wedding of up to 40.

*Say “I do in Winnipeg, MB, the land of 100,000 lakes and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

*Get hitched in Toronto, ON, home to the thriving gay village where TV’s breakthrough hit show “Queer as Folk was filmed.
