What’s happening in Canada this spring?

Sasquatch sighting, poetry and beer.

by Susan Musgrave

In search of one Bigfoot
“Bigfoot on the move again in the wilds of BC…” “Sightings the talk of ‘Sasquatch-ewan’…” You get the idea there’s a kind of one-upmanship going on: which province can chalk up the most Sasquatch sightings this spring?

Whether or not you believe in our large, hairy, bipedal humanoid, he’s definitely staging a comeback. Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization plans to start teaching us everything we’ll ever need to know about sasquatches, in case we bump into one, in a new TV series set to go into production this spring. Stay tuned.

March Hare Festival, Newfoundland and Labrador
Anyone looking for a spring break Newfoundland-style can share poetry, tunes and craic (i.e., good fun) at lively pubs in Corner Brook, NL. Named after the mad-dash Lewis Carroll character, the March Hare Festival has evolved into an annual, island-wide celebration of words.

“We liven the writing up with music and beer,” says Des Walsh, a writer who has been there since the festival’s beginning, in 1987. “I don't know anywhere else in the Jesus country where 300-plus people turn out to hear poetry being read.”

Clayoquot Sound in May
If you want to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday (think May long weekend) in a laid-back style, head up to Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC. Pack a picnic and take a boat ride, free of charge, to the Clayoquot Island Preserve. Every year on this weekend, the privately owned island opens to visitors. You can spend the day beachcombing, hiking and exploring the island’s pioneer gardens, including a wild rhododendron forest.
