What’s happening in Canada this spring?

Ottawa, ON’s Winterlude

You’d think Canadians would jump for joy with Environment Canada’s recent prediction of a warmer and shorter winter. Not so. “We call it Winterlude, not Waterlude,” says Ottawa Tourism’s Misty Wade Hovey.

February’s “Winterlude” is Ottawa, ON’s annual celebration of snow and ice. Slap on the blades and skim along the ice world’s biggest rink, go racing on your bed, check out concerts à la très fresco at the American Express Snowbowl outdoor stage, zip down a snow slide at the Sun Life Snowflake Kingdom or check out a surreal exhibition of snow and ice sculptures at Crystal Garden. New this year is the Winterlude Sound & Light Show, similar to the traditional summer one that bathes the façade of Parliament Hill in colour.

Then, if you survive winter, celebrate the birth of spring in April down the Rideau—along the Tay River. That’s when Perth, voted “Prettiest Town in Ontario” by TVOntario, salutes the running of the sap (the stuff of maple trees, not some fitness-crazed moron) with their Festival of the Maples.

This celebration offers up musical entertainment on the main streets plus a food and wine showcase. Local producers reveal how they get the syrup from beginning to end and offer up insights into this quintessential Canadian tradition. At the end of the day, treat yourself to maple syrup taffy on snow.
