Star chef Susur Lee bites into Big Apple, opens Shang.

New New York City restaurant makes a big splash on Manhattan’s trendy Lower East Side. Toronto keeps the chef’s signature LEE and Madeline’s.

He mused about doing it, and now he’s done it. Toronto, ON’s super-chef Susur Lee has opened a restaurant in New York City. Like doting parents, we’re sad to see him go, but oh, so proud.

We know Lee has what it takes: determination, talent, ambition and fearlessness. Lee opened his first restaurant, Lotus, in 1987 in Toronto and has been wowing us with fresh, original dishes ever since. Born in Hong Kong, he trained in classic French cooking. No wonder Lee pioneered fusion food. (Rack of lamb with Thai green curry sauce? Oh, yeah.)

In 2001, Gourmet named Lee “Canada’s hottest chef.” Even then, he was pondering what it would be like to have a restaurant in the Big Apple. “There’s something about the challenge of it,” Lee said. “I thought, ‘I can do that.’”

You’ll find Lee’s new restaurant, Shang, in the luxe Thompson LES (Lower East Side) boutique hotel. But here in Canada you can still sample the chef’s innovative tasting menu at LEE, a tapas-style restaurant at 603 King Street West in Toronto. Or for a more Euro experience, go next door to Madeline’s, named after Lee’s mom.
