It isn’t time yet to deck the halls for Christmas, but that shouldn’t stop you from putting together a wish list of fashions created by Canadian designers. Just a quick look behind the seams of the top runways, and it’s clear that homegrown talents are shaping the way we dress. Not sure where to start when it comes to tracking the who’s who of top talents? This roster of Canadians is sure to keep you in stitches of the most stylish kind:
Paul Hardy. The Winnipeg, MB-born designer didn’t enter the fashion scene quietly. He made a splash heard across the country at his first runway show in 2002. Forget rules. In his women’s wear, he mixes textures, vintage pieces with modern basics and expensive separates with the cheap and chic.
Pink Tartan. This label was a hit with the celebrity set soon after it opened up a showroom in New York. Followers such as Kate Hudson and Kim Cattrall had everyone coveting the polished elegance of the Canadian label, fronted by designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran.
Comrags. The designing duo of Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse has been a fashion powerhouse for more than 25 years. Their claims to fame are styles that strike a harmonious balance between fun and function, making Comrags a joy to wear.
Dsquared2. Toronto, ON twins Dean and Dan Caten have taken the fashion world by storm, first with Canada, then Milan, to become global superstars. Today’s hottest celebs, from Madonna to Justin Timberlake, boost their sex appeal with clothing that rocks with classic styling—and a contemporary yet edgy twist.
Andy Thê-Anh. Thê-Anh immigrated to Canada from Vietnam and brought with him a flair for glamour. His accessories and women’s wear have won raves for their refined, modern style that still pays homage to the history, film and vision arts that inspired it.
Brian Bailey. This Alberta-born designer loves women. You can see it in the loving attention put into every cuff, collar and cut. He was the first to create fashion collections in regular and plus sizes. Truly style for everyone.
Jeremy Laing. The Toronto, ON-based designer is a self-taught wonder who has a knack for creating a great fit. His women’s wear pieces look deceivingly simple, but there’s oodles of care and creativity behind every stitch.
Joeffer Caoc. Rooted in strong tailoring, this award-winning designer’s collection ranges from day wear to gowns. All have a common thread—superior structure, unconventional detailing and a fit that’s truly divine. It’s no wonder he’s become an international favourite.
