Wineries in Canada: sipping the North.

In the past 25 years, wine has really come of age in Canada.

by Margo Pfeiff

When you think of popping a cork, Canadian wine might not be the first to come to mind. But in the past 25 years, wine has really come of age in Canada. These days, Canadian vintages regularly scoop up international awards. In 2007, Canada produced an estimated 55 million litres at the some 500 wineries coast to coast.

The main wine regions are east and west: in the east, Ontario (known for its icewine), and in the west, British Columbia, “Napa of the North,” though talented vintners are cropping up more and more in places like Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and most recently, on the prairies in Saskatchewan. Here, a primer to sipping the North:

Great story. Traveling through Prince Edward County last year, we discovered that The Sandbar serves Prince Edward County wines by the glass. It's a little pub with a great deck and a view of the Sandbanks dunes. Located at Isaiah Tubbs Resort on West Lake.

Fall wine fest is coming up in the Okanagan Valley, some of the best Pinot Noir I've ever tasted comes out this year, rivaling Burgundy even. Running boutique winery trips in October to the hidden gems of British Columbia. www.swallowtail.ca
